Contempt in its Infancy

Posted on November 9, 2009

Today, seventy-one years ago, Kristallnacht took place. What is Kristallnacht? It is the night that the growing Nazi party first acted on a large scale against the Jews in Germany and Austria.

In two days and nights, over 800 synagogues were destroyed, over 25,000 Jews were sent to concentration camps, over 7,000 Jewish business’ were destroyed, and over a hundred Jews were murdered.

Prejudice as a word does not properly describe how the Jews were perceived. It goes much deeper.

The human trait that treats other humans with cold-blooded contempt is abominable. Yet contempt, in its infant forms, is all too present in our minds and homes. Are we quick to apologize or do we have too much pride? Are we quick to forgive or do we enjoy holding onto annoyance and animosity? Do we see every skin color as equally worthy of close friendship? Do we enjoy thinking about the ill-fortune of those with different lifestyles?

Let none us feed or nurture contempt in its infancy.  Wisdom and reality will always win in the end.

“Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action; reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character reap a destiny.”

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”

You have no idea how much I needed this reminder this week. Thanks Pastor Steve!

Thank you for posting this for us Steve. We must never forget the things that contempt has bred, nor the fruit that resulted (and will be produced when contempt is allowed to exist.)

Thanks for this sobering, profound reminder.
