A Dark History. A Joyful Future.

This beautiful and popular lake has a very dark history.

But the only people who know it’s history are the locals and those who know their history.

It was at this time in late October, but some 162 years ago, that a group of settlers on their way to California became snow bound high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. One bad turn of events after another coupled with one bad decision after another, led the settlers to face starvation or cannibalism.

They chose the latter.

And for those in the know, the lake will never shed it’s dark history. And for those less informed the lake will remain a beautiful spot. And for some of those less informed people they will find respite and inspiration from the lake and they’ll thank God for the lake.

This lake has a few similarities to you and me. We all have dark histories. If you doubt this, then you’re forgetful of some your meaner and angrier thoughts and words. You’ve also forgotten some of those movies you’ve seen and those times that you forgot that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

But because of Christ those dark histories are forgiven and forgotten. In fact, we’re God’s workmanship. We’re here on earth not to reflect our dark shadows, but to be used by God to reflect His greatness.

We are grateful that the vast majority of people are part of the less informed about our past. That is a God thing. He doesn’t emphasize the past. He emphasizes a hope and a future. Yes, even a lake with a very dark history has been used greatly in the past 162 years to bring people joy.

God is more than willing and more than able to do the same with us.
