“I Hate War.”

This photograph is from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C..

For more reasons than I have fingers and toes, the United States has lost its moral compass. Whether you on the right or left of the isle, it doesn’t matter. We’re a country without real leadership in any branch of government.

Before you gasp, please read FDR’s full words from the photograph.

“I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen men coughing out their gassed lungs. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed. I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war.” FDR, August 14, 1936

The Iraq war has proven to be a ugly test of leadership. On one side we have people who reject the war. On the other side we have people who support the war. Yet neither side has the leadership to end it or win it.

President Roosevelt had strengths and weaknesses, yet he hated the war that he led. Real leaders know hatred. A hatred for what is wrong and hatred of things not going right. A hatred that leads leaders to actually lead people to where they need to go.

Where do we and our leaders learn this hatred? From a holy God who hated sin so much that in love he sacrificed his righteous Son for wretched sinners so that they may know him and enjoy him.

It was a hatred of sin, for a people that he loved, that changed everything.
